Chapter Eleven
Max
I walk out of Samâs apartment in shock as my feet lead me down the hall. I canât grasp what Iâve just heard. My hand shakes as I press the elevator down button. I got to get out of this place. The doors slide open, and I stare until they start to close. Coming out of my daze, I step in. I scrub my hand across my face, and I hear their angry accusations again. Were they lies or the truth?
One second Iâm in the elevator and then next Iâm driving in my car. What really happened that night six years ago? Someone needs to tell me the truth, so I can trust Sam again. I should trust her now, and believe what she has to say. But she didnât deny it. Her father dragged her sister out of the apartment, and Sam stood frozen in place, staring at the door.
For a moment, I waited, hoping sheâd tell me her father was a liar. But when our gaze met, she turned her back to me and started to cry. She refused to turn around and face me. Was that my answer? No, I need an explanation, and my brother is going to give it to me.
The business district is quiet this time of night as I drive past the old Victorian where we used to live. The ramshackle house I had been so grateful to return to after I was released from jail. Vinceâs realty sign is lit by floodlights in the front yard. A huge white wood sign with Hudson Stewart Realty and business number painted on it in red highlighting the success he and Jackson sweated for. The same success Iâm working toward on my own.
The oncoming headlights wake me out of my brain fog as I press down on the gas and drive with direction. That night, Sam and I drove out of Bridgetown on the same road Iâm driving on tonight. But when I approach the ramp that splits the road, I head north instead of going south like I did that night. Vince has to tell me what happened that night at the police station.
Vince and Tiffâs new home sits back from the road in the ritziest development in Bridgetown. When we were growing up, this area was a field of cheap land where people dumped tires and broken appliances. Now only a rich man can afford to live on the old swamp. Their gray two-story house is lit up, inside and out, and thereâs a brand-new Rover in the drive with a vanity plate that reads HDSN1. Maya and Jackson are here. I sigh, reconsidering barging in uninvited on their couplesâ night. But thereâs no good time for me to ask the questions I have.
âMax, welcome. What a nice surprise.â Tiff steps away from the open front door as I enter the hallway leading into the living room. Maya and Vince smile when they see me, and Jackson stands up to shake my hand.
